THIS IS IMPORTANT

Please Please remember when you are out on your bike your are a representative for cycling in general .

We don't want anybody in our events acting up to the negative label given to some cyclist these days by the press ie:- lycra louts !

So on this point please no going to the toilet out in the open at the HQ or anywhere in Eastbourne! In the past we have had the police around after complaints were made with one person urinating in public.  Please be considerate and think about local residents who graciously put up with our cyclosportives.

WE DON'T WANT YOU ARRESTED !

There are ample toilets at the HQ. Obviously out on the course going to the toilet in the open is at your discretion BUT PLEASE BE DISCREET Also be aware that all the feed stations are at Village halls and have toilets.

THE TRAIN

Please check that there is a service for trains to Eastbourne on the Sunday before attempting to travel by train with your bike. There are the usual train track maintenance procedures carried out on Sundays. This can lead to passengers having to use the bus for some or all of their journey. This might prove to be a non starter if your lugging your bike around with you.

WEATHER and your kit

Although Eastboune is reported to be the sunniest place in the UK you should still prepare for all weather conditions.

Check the weather forecast above but don't depend on it bring everything in your kit bag Just incase the conditions change from leaving home to starting the cyclosportive. Remember just because it's sunny and dry when you start doesn't always mean it will be sunny and dry all the way around ! Come prepared.

Check out this great explanation by Cycle Film.

YOUR BIKE AND TOOLS

It is a good idea to check your bike a few days before the event to give yourself time to repair anything should you find something broken or not working properly. There is nothing worse than traveling to an event to find that your bike isn't working properly.

Check your tyres, for wear and go over your bike tightening up everything . New tyres are always a good idea before riding a sportive although going for a few rides on new tyres is also a good idea just to bed them in.. Also if you haven't changed your chain from last season there is a chance your chain might break. If you have had a worn narrow 10 speed chain on your bike now for some time it might well need changing along with the sprockets and chainrings. On many events we have lots of people breaking chains not because their power output is so high that their chains couldn't take the strain but because the chains were stretched and should have been replaced a long time ago. If you not sure if your chain needs replacing take your bike down to a good bike shop they should be able to give you advice. Click here

DON'T FORGET TO BRING A TOOL BAG which fits on your bike with you to the cyclosportive. Make sure your tool bag has at least three inner tubes , tyre levers, a chain link extractor and spare fixing link. A multi tool which has all the allen keys sizes that your bike needs is also essential. If you have room in the bag a puncture repair kit that might also be an option, although three inner tubes is event better. Check out this great video by Quick Release TV they don't recommend as many inner tubes as us but it's still a good video.

Note although you may well get away with one inner tube you are advised to carry more than one inner tube for this cyclosportive.

A note about Garmins

Those with Garmins devices or equivalent make sure you charge your device up the day before, don't be tempted to charge it over night only to find that it hasn't charge properly :-(

EMERGENCY NUMBER

On the day of the event when signing on you will receive a start pack that will consist of things like maps and route details etc. Also in the start pack you will receive a bike number that goes on the handle bars of your bike. On the back of the number is an emergency number to be used if your bike has mechanical problems or you have an accident.

Obviously if you or a friend are involved in a serious accident then 999 should be called, but we do have our own ambulances on the circuit and if you feel the accident doesn't condone calling 999 you can call the emergency number with your location and our Ambulance crew will get to you as quick as they can.

You might want to put the emergency number in your phone now, the number is :-

07771928201

When you have to call the above emergency number:- To work out where you are it is best to have a bike computer on your bike that tells you how far you have ridden on your chosen route i.e. Classic, Challenge or Tour route. When you sign on for the event in the morning at the HQ you will pick up a route card and map. With t he route card you should be able to gauge where you are before phoning up to ask for help.

All the SRS Events bike mechanics will be only too pleased to help you should you get a bad mechanical problem that calls for their assistance. They are very busy on the day so give them some time to get to you. Obviously though if you wait more than half and hour then phone the above number again just to make sure someone is on their way to you.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHANGE AN INNER TUBE YOURSELF, PLEASE LEARN BEFORE THE EVENT.
